In 2005, WiDS was initiated by a small group of women from industry and the military. They aimed to build a network to support and promote the advancement of women leaders in defence and security professions. Today, WiDS has over 3,000 members who work across industry, government, military, cyber and physical security, police services and first responder agencies. Members include all genders at various levels of their career. Women in Defence and Security (WiDS) is a national not-for-profit organization that aims to promote and support the advancement of women in careers related to Canadian defence and security. WiDS aims to transform culture through their three pillars of Creating Connections, Recognizing Excellence and Developing Talent. Scholarship & Fellowship.

The WiDS Scholarship & Canadian Global Affairs Institute (CGAI) Fellowship are awarded annually in recognition of outstanding students pursuing higher education related to Canada’s defence and security. Emerging Leaders: Someone – in any stage of their career – who is doing great things; someone who is inspiring change; someone who is blazing a trail and setting an example for other young women to follow.
